Softwood vs Hardwood Decking (Including Jatoba)

Many homeowners search for the best type of decking for UK gardens. Here is a clear comparison to help you choose between softwood decking and hardwood decking such as Jatoba.

Softwood Decking

  • Made from fast-growing trees like pine and spruce.
  • Usually the most cost-effective option for decking in Bedford.
  • Lightweight and easy to work with during installation.
  • Good for simple garden decking projects and raised platforms.
  • Requires annual treatment to stay protected.
  • Typical lifespan: 10–15 years with regular maintenance.

Hardwood Decking (Jatoba, Ipe, Balau, etc.)

  • Made from slow-growing trees, resulting in extremely dense, strong timber.
  • Ideal for premium outdoor projects, terraces and heavy-use areas.
  • Highly resistant to impact, moisture, insects, and wear.
  • Jatoba decking in particular is known for its rich colour, beautiful grain and outstanding durability.
  • Much lower maintenance compared to softwood (oil once or twice a year).
  • Typical lifespan: 20–30+ years with correct installation.
